A warm flush crept up Carly’s neck and onto her face as the crowd in the Flying Owl pressed in on her, their sweat and perfume becoming her own. She edged her way through the throng, pressing against sweaty backs and oversized purses until she came to a clearing near the bathroom. She leaned against the wall and wiped her forehead: her fingers came away shiny with sweat and make-up.
The voices of the crowd reached a crescendo, morphing into a single yell as the band walked out onto the stage. Carly tried to catch Tyler’s eye, but he bent over his amp, a crease forming between his eyes as he turned the knobs. She knew that look, and it twisted her insides to see it now.

A tingle crept over her. She pulled her eyes away from Tyler’s face and wrapped her arms around herself, unable to shake the uncanny feeling that she was being watched. The sea of people parted, their attention everywhere but on her, and Carly locked eyes with a woman leaning against the bar. A small smile crept onto the woman’s face.
Carly searched the woman’s face for some sign of familiarity, her skin tingling more with each passing second. Carly ground her teeth. Maybe she was a security guard, looking for a chance to throw Carly out of the bar for being underage. But no, she was wearing skintight leather pants, a low-cut shirt, and her curly hair was hanging down around her shoulders – hardly the wardrobe of a security guard.
  So what does she want?

This week’s Weekly Woof is dedicated to Buddy, a 7 year old Boston Terrier. Like Emmy, Buddy was adopted via Petfinder. When his owners met him, he was thin, cowering, and scared. Apparently he had been crated for the better part of 7 years, and may have been abused. Still, they couldn’t resist that sweet face, so they decided to take a chance on him and bring him home.

IMG_1535

In the last 5 months, Buddy has opened up beautifully. He loves his new food and has reached a healthy weight. He’s learning to trust people and to play with toys. He likes to do happy backspins after every meal, walk, and outing.

He is a sweet, lovely boy who loves to cuddle, though sometimes he has complicated feelings and needs to take breaks from people. His owners know that it will take Buddy a little while to get over past abuse, so they are letting him take his time.

“The most important thing is that he filled the huge hole in my heart after our last dog died, and I love him more than anything.” – Giannina, Buddy’s owner

The great irony of Buddy’s life: he was born on the 4th of July, but spent most of his life in a cage. Next year, his owners plan to celebrate his new-found freedom with a fun birthday party. Can you imagine that? A dog party!

Here are a few of Buddy’s quirks: he sleeps all day, and he’s so lazy he sometimes plops his butt on the stairs instead of walking all the way down, or will plop down in the middle of a walk. Sometimes he’ll sometimes randomly give you his paw if he thinks you have a treat.

What a goof 🙂

kiss

I know what you’re going to ask: “Is this a kissing book?” Only sort of. SIGHTLESS is mostly a daemon fighting, ass-kicking book, but there IS one heck of a kiss right smack in the middle, and I’d like to share it with you as part of a contest I’m participating in. Let me know what you think!

Title: SIGHTLESS

Kissing Scene:
“How long have you known you’re a daemon?” Tyler asked, breaking the silence.

Carly dug her heels into the ground. “I found out around the time you played at The Flying Owl.”
“That was almost two months ago!” He released her hand. “I can’t believe you didn’t trust me.”
“The Dominatori say humans can’t know—“
“And your Dad! I can’t imagine what he’s been through, wondering where you are all the time.”
“I don’t need a guilt trip from you,” Carly said, yanking a weed out of the ground. “You have no idea how hard this has been for me.”
“You’re right, I don’t, because you didn’t trust me enough to let me in.” Tyler clenched his fists at his sides.
“I wanted to tell you every single day, but–”
“Then you should have. I’m your best friend.”
“Maybe that’s not enough for me!” Carly blurted out. She slapped her hand over her mouth. “I’m sorry,” she whispered through her fingers. “I didn’t mean that.”
Tyler knelt in front of her, his hands on her knees. His face was so close to hers that she could see flecks of brown in his blue eyes.
“Are you sure?” he asked quietly. “That you didn’t mean it?”
“Why does it matter?”she asked, unable to look away.
“It matters because maybe it’s not enough for me either.”
He reached a hand behind her head and pulled her toward him, his fingers warm against the back of her neck. She opened her lips, feeling the heat of his mouth on hers. She lay back, pulling him with her. He kissed her more deeply, cradling her head gently. She grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him closer, craving the weight of his body on hers.
“I missed you, Carls,” Tyler whispered into her neck.
He rolled over onto his side, pulling her with him. She wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face in his chest. “I missed you too.”

Did you hear?!

it's friday

So let’s talk about a bunch of random stuff!

First off, I’m celebrating my 27th birthday this weekend. Boyfriend has very sweetly suggested a “Special Lady Day” (this is way less mushy if you watch The League…trust me). We’re going to have breakfast, buy flowers at the SM farmer’s market, go to my favorite furniture store, and just generally hang out. Once night rolls around, I’m having a birthday dinner with friends at ROC, followed by fancy craft cocktails at Oldfields!

In other news, I’ve started writing DIVE, my new YA novel about a 15 year old cliff diver. Here’s a quick sample:

Kamagra is proficient erectile dysfunction treatment used worldwide to remove problems during intercourse. cheap online cialis ED is something that affects close to 25% men between the ages 40 to 55 (Kama on right?). cialis in spain Although only four surgeries such as this have taken place, there could be a promising future for the likes of war veterans and cancer patients. cialis generico mastercard Strong nerves and tissues hold more during devensec.com levitra cheap online sexual arousal and gain fuller and firmer erection for lovemaking. “The edge of the cliff drops off so suddenly that you could miss it in the dark. The sharp dig of a jagged rock, the cool brush of a tall reed: they mean more to you when they’re the last thing you feel before you take the Dive.”

What do you think? It reminds me a bit of ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS, but from a male perspective. Remember that book? So wonderful.

And now, a few more pictures of my apartment, because I just love it so much.

we found this awesome painting in a furniture store on Lincoln in SM. We haggled it down to something reasonable, and now it hangs above our kitchen table.

I am so excited for this edition of my WEEKLY WOOF. Today’s pup is named Emmy, and she is a truly amazing dog.

This is one of the original photos that Rob and Brittany saw on Petfinder.com. Who wouldn't fall in love with that face?

This is one of the original photos that Rob and Brittany saw on Petfinder.com. Who wouldn’t fall in love with that face?

Emmy’s owners, Brittany and Rob, found her through Petfinder.com, and it was love at first sight. I’m going to let Brittany take it from here:

“Emmy’s background is not completely known, but we think she’s about 3 years old. The shelter told us she was likely used at a backyard breeder facility and was released or escaped. She was found as a stray in Texas, and was in terrible shape.

Photo 5

“Emmy had been severely injured and required multiple surgeries, including the removal of one eye that had been damaged as a result of an animal bite. She was shuffled around from shelters because her care was very costly, and she eventually ended up in Omaha at a foster family.

Photo 7“When we picked her up, she had just gotten surgery to correct a medial patellar luxation (kneecap that slips out of place). She had a huge cast on for the six weeks she was at home.

She immediately played nicely with her brother (our cat Sam) and they still take turns chasing each other around the house. In the first two months at our house, Emmy’s health improved a lot. She gained four pounds, her coat thickened and developed a gloss, and a scar on her eye healed.

Photo 4

“I took her to school with me (in Omaha, an hour from Lincoln, where we live) to get her used to car rides and to socialize her with people. She was very popular in the sociology department, greeting students and faculty at the door. A professor even took Emmy with her to class one day. Another time, when I was in the department without her, another student, whom I didn’t know, approached me to ask if I was Emmy’s parent. She said that meeting Emmy was an inspiration to her; she decided to adopt a shelter dog instead of going to a breeder or pet store. She said she was surprised by how happy and trusting Emmy was, despite her sad background.

Photo 8“Emmy is a silly girl. She will dance for a treat. She is a VERY loud snorer. When we come home or any other time she’s happy, she is so excited that she runs around the house doing laps and snorting like a pig; then she jumps all over us. She loves walks, even though she has a crooked gait from an improperly healed injury in her wrist. She carries her toys with her from room to room. She loves to watch horses on television. When you ask her, she always looks for her dad outside. She cuddles with Sam when she’s cold; they are the same size so it’s super cute. I fight insomnia for 10 years. Maybe someone says that I am dependent on medications, but I must disagree. I used a bunch of different preparations, and only Ambien from produced the desired effect. If you must make preparations to put you to sleep, so why not use something that really works. My http://www.ejmckay.com/order-ambien-zolpidem-online/ regular dose is 5 mg before going to bed. When I say “I love you,” she licks my face. When she plays with us, she swings her body around really fast so she pushes her butt towards us. She has random bursts of energy and she lick-attacks us.”

It sounds to me like Emmy’s wonderful owners, Brittany and Rob, are just as lucky to have her as she is to have them.

If you’re interested in adopting a pet, check out Petfinder. If you aren’t in the market for a pet, you can still reach out to shelters and rescues in your area. They’re always looking for volunteers.

If you’d like me to feature YOUR DOG in a future WEEKLY WOOF, let me know in the comments!

Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to check back in next Wednesday. You’re going to love the dog I have lined up…

I’m Jasper, a beautiful, sweet and handsome Golden Doodle (if I do say so myself).

jasper

I’ve been training my family for almost 4 years. Finally, they understand that I do nothing wrong. I quickly tell everyone who will listen that my brother, Oliver, did it, no matter what “it” might be. My family enjoys having ONE good dog, after all.

Some time ago, I could not pick up a sedative, and so the doctor suggested that I try Valium. Do not believe me, there are no such side effects as from other drugs in this cycle. Naturally, they are selected individually and are not suitable for everyone. I expressed https://ranovus.com/valdia/ my opinion.

In case you’re interested in buying me a present, here are some of my favorite things:

Toy: I like toys that make animal noises, in particular stuffed ducks that quack, birds that chirp, and pigs that oink. Mere squeaking is so yesterday!

Food: Butter. Unfortunately, it’s kept on the kitchen at my house. However, I am a Master Counter Surfer, so I have no problem getting it down when my humans forever to put it away. Uh, I mean…Oliver did it.

Activity: Swimming, running, and travel. I love the car!

Career: Chief Bakery Taster

Life is sweet!

Foods: He’s pretty non-discriminating, but he particularly enjoys anything really smelly, and ALL cookies. On his first day at the bakery he ate 29 cookies!!

Activity:  His favorite activity is riding around town with his head out the sky roof. He is in charge of navigation! His best trips are to the dog bakery. Barking is his specialty. Oliver also likes to drink out of tall fountains, chase squirrels, and hang with his brother, Jasper.

Ollie is the happiest dog his humans have ever had (and they’ve had a LOT of dogs). That’s why he’s so talkative…he wants everyone around to know how happy he is!

Over the last six months, I’ve thrown myself headfirst into writing, which has been awesome. However, one 450 page novel, 22 blog posts, seven short stories, two articles for ShelfPleasure.com, and countless manuscript and query reviews later…I am le tired.

dog-tired

Now that the second draft of SIGHTLESS is finished, I’m forcing myself to take a break from the book for a little while. At first it was because I was exhausted, but now I’m starting to appreciate the other benefits as well. So far, here’s what I’ve enjoyed most:

1. Taking a break from SIGHTLESS has given me the critical distance necessary to make cuts and changes.

2. I’ve come up with new characters, new settings, and new conflicts, but I haven’t had to worry about making them perfect. In fact, it’s helped me come up with my next book: DIVE.

Get up slowly and stable yourself to prevent respitecaresa.org soft cialis pills a fall. 4. I can spend time with real humans, not just my characters.

5. I’m feeling healthier — it’s hard not to spend a lot of time sitting down when you’re a writer!

Eventually, I’ll pick SIGHTLESS back up (although not until my critique partners are done reading it. A certain Emma Clark will kill me if I make a single change before she finishes reading), but for now I’m enjoying the break.

Do you have any tricks for rejuvenating your mind after a big project? Tell me in the comments!
