Hey Guys!

I’m excited to say that this will be my first post as part of Thursday’s Children, an awesome weekly blog hop. Check out the linky at the bottom of this page to see posts by other participants, and feel free to check out how you can participate by visiting Rhiann Wynn-Nolet’s website!

Thursday's Children

Now, down to business….

A few months back, I wrote a post about ‘unplugging’ from technology for the sake of your health, but recently I’ve been thinking about unplugging  for the sake of creativity.

Like most writers, I work a full time job, then I return home and work for another 4-6 hours–be it on my book, critiquing for friends, editing my client’s work, or simply doing chores around the house (confession: the boyfriend does a ton of chores b/c I am such a fiend about writing in the evenings).

But it doesn’t stop there. When I’m not at home or at work, I’m often guilty of reading twitter and blogs on my phone, especially those that pertain to writing/reading. There’s so much to read, so much to learn…I want to know it all!

somet

But what if this overzealous dedication is counterproductive? What if all it’s making me miss out on the very thing that will make me a great writer—you know, LIVING MY LIFE? Because after all, who wants to read a book written by someone who doesn’t know about anything except, well, writing books?

So, I’m going to rededicate myself to unplugging. To relaxing. Here’s my plan:

  • I’m going to get outside more: take walks, go on hikes, ride my bike to the beach.
  • Visit friends in my area
  • Try out complicated recipes using my tagine
  • Explore my city. First up: the Watts Towers.

Sure, I’ll miss out on some writing time and some blog posts, but I have a feeling that taking time away might improve my focus and creativity during those times I am writing. I may even find a whole new brand of inspiration out there, one that comes from the outside world.

Now, it’s your turn. Are you overworked and underplayed? Do you have to force yourself to unplug once in a while? What do you do to rejuvenate yourself? Let me know in the comments!

WonderCon:

According to Wikipedia, WonderCon is “an annual comic book, science fiction, and motion picture convention, held in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1987.” For the last two years, it has been held in Anaheim.

But it’s so much more. It’s costumes. It’s characters. It’s running through the aisles with light sabers and Tardis t-shirts. It’s autographs and pictures. It’s whispers and shouts. And for many, it’s the best time of the year…

2013-03-30 19.08.06

…aside from Comic-Con, anyway.

I was lucky enough to attend WonderCon this year with my uncle (who is one of the original ComicCon nerds…hi Mark!) and my boyfriend, Superman.

2013-03-30 12.39.42

We spent the weekend exploring the Dealer Rooms, thumbing through comics, eyeing collectibles, trying on t-shirts, and mooning over gorgeous art.

I also bought ALL the books. Here’s a small sampling…

We also saw PANELS AND SCREENINGS

WonderCon is a great opportunity to hear form the pros about all manner of wonderful things: writing, drawing, acting, marketing, pitching…you name it! It’s also a lot of fun to learn behind-the-scenes stuff.

A few highlights:

Cassandra Clare and the cast of City of Bones (+ a trailer and scene!)

Cassie is super friendly and her cast seems very enthusiastic about the project. I’m looking forward to seeing this YA novel on the silver screen, especially the party scenes.

Bruce Cambell and the cast of Evil Dead (+ a trailer and scene!)

BC is dry and witty, and the movie looks ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING. I can’t be alone in my bathroom anymore.

Joss Whedon and the cast of Much Ado About Nothing (+ a trailer and scene!)

Joss…is…my…favorite…human. I also saw many familiar faces (including Andrew from Buffy and Simon from Firefly/Serenity)

COSTUMES

Still, my favorite part of Wondercon was wandering around, checking out the amazing costumes.

I saw stormtroopers mourning the loss of their Death Star comrades…

The line to see Joss and the cast of Much Ado About Nothing!

The line to see Joss and the cast of Much Ado About Nothing!

As I’m sure you can tell, the fans are what make WonderCon what it is. The best part of the entire Con (aside from hearing Joss make a reference to “Friday Night Lights”) was getting to see all these wonderful nerds having such an AMAZING time.

I highly recommend you try to attend either WonderCon or Comic-Con next year. It’s a fantastic experience, whether you dress up, dress down, go all weekend or just for the day. Just go…you won’t regret it.

I am extremely excited to introduce you all to GEMMA, the 1 1/2-year-old brindle English Bulldog with white markings, and ECKO,the 7-year-old flashy fawn Boxer!

mybabies

This has got to be one of my favorite Weekly Woofs to date, as you’ll be able to tell by the sheer volume of photos I’m posting.

Let’s start with the extremely obedient Ecko. Here’s what Alison, his owner, has to say:

He is still playful as a puppy and has a fascination with balls.  He knows well over 50 commands.  Verbally, or with hand signals only, I can get this dog to do just about anything I want him to.

DSC_0093DSC_0056

Some of the fun tricks I taught him are: to give a high-five, shake and then shake with other paw, wave at someone using his paw, howl on command, “speak” by barking or “whisper” by giving a small yip, if i say bang and he falls over dead on his side,

ecko
ecko3

My personal favorite trick – if i say “achoo” he’ll get me a tissue out of the box! (You won’t want to use it afterwards, since he drools, but it’s a neat trick for when company comes over.)

Next up is the lovely Gemma!

DSC_0129

Gemma is the exact opposite of Ecko.  She NEVER minds!  She does whatever she wants to do (whenever she wants to do it).  It’s the stubborn bulldog breed! In my house, she is a bull in a China shop, knocking over everything over in her path…including the kids.

DSC_0092DSC_0032

You may find lot of herbal pills like Kamdeepak capsules daily two times with milk or cheap cialis online reference water. So, you should only generic cialis uk use VigrX male enhancement pill rather than any other pills. Kamagra is one among some very effective and they promise to increase the size viagra 50 mg of the penis resulting foul discharge and peyronie’s disease (involving abnormal scar tissue in tissues inside the penis cause painful erections). Important information Here are a few things at home! Remember – never do anything to get over it whereas there are some who take the free samples of viagra issue very seriously and actually take efforts to get through it and fight with it to make sure appropriate safety standards are already met.

Gemma has almost every bad habit a dog could have – chewing, knocking over her water/food constantly, barking (a lot!), jumping on furniture, getting into things that don’t belong to her, pulling constantly on the leash (until she’s dragging me down the road). She’s the kind of dog who if you throw a ball for her, you have to get the hell out of the way or she’s going to plow over you.  (This is not a lie…I have a scar to prove it!)

DSC_0025

Thankfully, she is potty-trained (had no problem with that, shockingly enough) and she doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.  She loves everyone and everything.  She’s a playful, goofy girl who snores and farts and makes us laugh constantly with her antics.

DSC_0086

Sounds like Gemma is worth the trouble, doesn’t it? 🙂

GEMMA AND ECKO

Both dogs love each other to death.  I have no problems with food aggression, and they both love me, my hubby, and the kids.  Both dogs love the frisbee and as you can see in the picture, they are willing to share it.

DSC_0181

Gemma loves the snow and, unfortunately, the mud.  She walks through puddles in Summer and rubs her whole body on the snow banks in Winter.  Ecko is more content with sitting with me in our sun room or laying at my feet while I write.  When my son comes home on the school bus, Ecko runs out to greet him, but I have to keep Gemma inside until my son gets up the driveway or she’ll run after the bus and I’d have to go to China to look for her.

DSC_0115

Gemma switches back and forth between toys because she only wants whichever toy Ecko is going for.  And both dogs love tug of war.  They pull my kids socks off their feet or gloves off their hands.  I don’t normally encourage the behavior, but it’s hard not to laugh.

At the beginning of 2013, I put together a New Year’s Resolution Post. My #1 goal was to read one book per week, which has proved both challenging and awesome.

I’ve been keeping track of what I’ve read and what I want to read in a very attractive Google Doc, but I thought I’d share my January/February reads with all of you in case you’re looking for a great book (and don’t worry — this post is SPOILER FREE).

Oh! and before I forget, if you plan on buying any of these wonderful reads, do me a solid and use the link below each picture. Thanks…and enjoy!

And now, in no particular order, I give you my January + February Bookshelf.

Cinder

Cinder (Lunar Chronicles)

Have you ever wondered what the classic tale of Cinderella would have been like if the protagonist had been a cyborg? If so, look no further than CINDER by Marissa Meyer. The first installment of the Lunar Chronicles is a fun, quick read with just the right level of sci-fi.

Buy/Borrow/Bust: Buy! It’s already out on paperback, and if you love it, you can buy the second book in the Lunar Chronicles in hardcover.

Best Place to Read It: On an airplane: this page turner will easily get you through a cross country flight. Warning: the strange cover may lead to fellow passengers asking you what you’re reading.

Fablehaven

Fablehaven

If you’re a fan of Middle Grade novels and classic fantasy, then BRANDON MULL’s bestselling FABLEHAVEN will be a slam dunk. It starts out a little slow, but the world he creates is unique and inspiring. FABLEHAVEN is the first in a series, so if you love it…there’s a lot more where that came from!

Buy/Borrow/Bust: Borrow. You should be able to find this series in your local library. I enjoyed it, but if I could go back and borrow it instead of buying it, I probably would.

Best Place to Read It: On the grass in a beautiful garden with a cup of steaming hot chocolate — that way you’ll feel right at home when you step into Mull’s lovely garden world.

Leviathan

Leviathan

Scott Westerfeld really outdid himself with LEVIATHAN. If you’re not familiar with the steampunk genre, this is a great place to start. Set in a fictional version of WWI, LEVAITHAN tells the story of two teenagers poised to change the fate of Europe…if only they can get the Clankers and the Darwinists to work together.

Buy/Borrow/Bust: Buy! This book is worth owning for the awesome artwork alone, but it’s also a fantastic read.

Best Place to Read It: In the belly of the beast…whether that’s a giant, steam-powered machine or a real live whale is up to you!

Miss Peregrine

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Ransom Rigg’s MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN starts off extremely strong: the prologue absolutely stole my heart. As for the rest of the novel, I enjoyed it…but I found the narrator less than gripping. Still, this book has taken the YA shelves by storm, so it’s worth knowing what all the fuss is about — especially if you like the idea of time travel.
Erectile Dysfunction is levitra prices an ailment which has the potential to redeem the chances of cardiac arrest and other cardio vascular disorders. It is important to be sexually tablet sildenafil stimulated for it to work. In Case of Chronic Diseases The chronic generic tadalafil http://appalachianmagazine.com/2017/06/02/what-does-it-mean-if-a-state-is-a-commonwealth/ diseases like syphilis, rheumatism etc. Now there are many online stores where you can purchase cheap cialis click here for info at the finest affordable cost. cialis pills are not only cheap cialis but also it involves psychological actions.
Buy/Borrow/Bust: Borrow. This is a fun, quick read…but it’s not a “must own.”

Best Place to Read It: This strange tale may give you the chills, so I recommend snuggling up next to a fire on a rainy day and letting Riggs take you on an adventure back in time.

Paranormalcy

Paranormalcy

I was surprised by Kiersten White’s PARANORMALCY. I expected it to be just another paranormal tale about a girl and some vamps, but instead I found myself tumbling headfirst into a well spun tale about a girl w/ a pink taser (“tasey”) hired to track down paranormals that turn out to be more human than she expected.

Buy/Borrow/Bust: Borrow — or Nook/Kindle.

Best Place to Read It: While you get your nails done! PARANORMALCY is a fun, paranormal romp…the perfect read to accompany your own indulgences.

Stardust

Stardust: The Gift Edition

Neil Gaiman is a master, and Stardust might just be the crown jewel of his literary collection. You may be familiar with the movie version of Stardust (starring Clare Danes, Robert De Niro, and Michelle Pfeiffer), but I promise you that the novel is worth a read. From the magical land beyond the town of Wall to the beautiful but headstrong fallen Star, there’s a lot to fall in love with in STARDUST.

Buy/Borrow/Bust: Buy! It’s already out on paperback, but you can easily find a hardcover version that won’t break the bank. I actually have a collectors edition that was recently released — and it STILL wasnt’ that pricey.

Best Place to Read It: This romantic fairy tale is perfect for the beach.

The Contortionist's Handbook

The Contortionist’s Handbook

I LOVED THIS BOOK. If you love plot twists and learning strange things, you’ll enjoy Craig Clevenger’s story of a man who creates fake identities. Clevenger’s narrative style is similar to that of Chuck Palahniuk, but there’s a tad more heart here (and a lot less ick factor). THE HANDBOOK is crafty and clever, and it made me laugh out loud.

Buy/Borrow/Bust: Buy! Buy! Buy!

Best Place to Read It: At a bar with a stiff drink.

Check back in next month for my March round up. Until then…thanks for reading!

BlogHop
I’m so happy that my fellow dog lover Alison Bliss chose me to carry on The Hop. Allison is currently working on RULES OF PROTECTION, which poses this thrilling question: If an FBI agent stole his only witness from Witness Protection, where would he hide her?  Awesome, right?

The purpose of this hop is to expose people to new writers and new genres. I hope you will vist all the links provided in this blog hop and see all the wonderful new writers and their fantastic books.

Without further ado, I give you my NEXT BIG THING.

What is the working title of your book?

DIVE

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Fourteen-year-old Kiro has been training to become a cliff diver since he was small, but his dream of completing this male rite of passage is put on hold when a strange girl washes up on the beach… and demands to Dive.

What genre does your book fall under?

DIVE is going to be light magical realism, which is defined as “a genre where magic elements are a natural part in an otherwise mundane, realistic environment.” The characters will encounter a few instances of magic on the island where they live.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

I love this part of the game!

KIRO

TEQUAN_RICHMOND-Kiro

This handsome dude is named Tequan Richmond. You may recognize him from the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris (he played Drew) or from Ray, in which he played Ray Charles, Jr. Anywho, I think Tequan has the perfect look and feel for Kiro. Strong and stubborn, but still young and mostly innocent, Kiro is a typical fifteen-year-old boy with a lot to prove…especially to his older brother Tan, the new Chief of their tribe.

LWIN

Selena Gomez - Lwin

I’d like Selena Gomez to play the sassy, outspoken Lwin. From the moment she washes up on the beach of Kiro’s island, she starts causing trouble for the hot-headed son of the former Chief. I think Selena will bring the necessary ferocity to this role while still maintaining a sweet and likable persona.

TAN

Denzel Whitaker - Tan

This type of surgery is performed to know the right reason. viagra australia What is Ovulatory dysfunction? Ovulation problems sildenafil online india can occur with every woman that has undergone puberty. Given the nature of product, plain packaging and discreet delivery are must. purchasing cialis online

Well, HELLO THERE. This is Denzel Whitaker, and I think he’d make a great Tan. As Kiro’s older brother and the newly appointed head of the Yaaril tribe, Tan has a lot on his plate. Denzel has done a lot of work on children’s tv programs, so I think he can bring the necessary lightness and warmth to this role (and to Kiro’s life).

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

I hope to find an agent to represent this work, as well as SIGHTLESS, my YA urban fantasy novel.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

I’m still in the writing process, but I hope to finish editing SIGHTLESS by the end of April and then turn all of my attention to DIVE. With any luck, the first draft will be finished sometime in July or August.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

When I first thought of the concept of DIVE, I was immediately reminded of a wonderful book I read in elementary school called ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS. There weren’t any magical elements in Scott O’Dell’s beautiful book, but it did tell the story of a young girl who must fend for herself on an island.

Another piece of my childhood that comes to mind is Fern Gully (the wonderful Disney movie from the ’90s). If you haven’t seen this animated film, then you MUST check it out. The best character is Batty, voiced by Robin Williams.

Where the hero’s journey of ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS meets the magic of Fern Gully…that’s where you’ll find DIVE.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

I had just finished the first draft of SIGHTLESS, and I was taking a break from it while my beta readers critiqued it. I wanted to get to work on another book, but I didn’t have any ideas. So, of course, I turned to Pinterest. Here’s what I found:

cliffdiver

The picture was so inspiring! The abandon with which he’s jumping, the gorgeous setting, the light pouring through a hole somewhere off camera…I fell in love, and DIVE was born.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

THE MAGIC. Much of DIVE is devoted to the relationship between Kiro and Lwin (and how Kiro makes a place for her in his life and heart), but the climax of the novel involves a curious scene at the bottom of a water-filled cave…where Lwin and Kiro find something that might prove to be the key to saving Tan’s life.

AND THAT’S DIVE!

I’m passing the Blog Hop torch over to the newly agented Juliana L. Brandt, who’s working on a FANTASTIC dystopian YA, and Charlie Holmberg, who is going to knock your socks off with her tale of paper magic and heroism. They’ll have their “Next Big Thing” posts ready for you in a few days, but I recommend that you check out their blogs in the meantime. They’re both swell ladies with a LOT to say that’s worth reading. I’m also meeting them both for the first time in TEN DAYS so I’m SUPER excited.

Thanks for checking out MY NEXT BIG THING!

library

When I was young, weekend trips to the library were an adventure. I’d charge through the front doors and down the endless hallway, my eyes trained on the colorful mobiles swinging overhead as I made my way back to the children’s reading room. The dark walls would give way to brightly colored murals, and the sensible reading chairs were replaced with tiny plastic seats big enough for only the smallest of bottoms. It was a place for whispered stories and squeals of delight, and it was mine.

By the time we got home, I would have decided the order in which I would devour my many books. I started out with Where the Wild Things Are by the late and great Maurice Sendak then graduated to the Amelia Bedelia series. The older I got, the longer the books I chose, so our trips became less and less frequent. Eventually I must have returned a book without picking out another, because my weekly visits stopped. But I kept reading. Sure, much of my reading list was dictated by my teachers, and yes, my parents would hand me books they thought were important for me to read, but the joy of reading was still there, even if the opportunity to pick my own book was limited to the occasional book report.

Choosing reading material today is far more complicated than picking out a book from the children’s shelves or having an assigned reading list handed to me at the beginning of the semester. In fact, it’s almost a combination of the two:  I am able to choose what I read while simultaneously treading through the water of popular opinion and Top 100 Lists.

This has always been true, of course, but something has happened over the last ten years: the internet. Whereas before I was limited to the opinions of my friends and family, librarians, teachers, and the occasional booklist, I now have access to websites like goodreads.com which allow me to see not only what my friends are reading and what their friends are reading, but also what some guy in Detroit is reading. It raises a lot of questions, least of which is the issue of taste. Do I think Emma has good taste in books? If she liked Haunted, will I like it too?

Then there’s websites like Amazon.com, which give me the opportunity to peruse thousands of reviews with the click of my mouse. Kenny in South Carolina thought Gone Girl was unfairly biased in favor of the male perspective. Should I bother reading it, or just assume he’s right and move on?

And don’t forget Facebook and Twitter, which let me see what my friends are reading in real time.

So we have more opinions to weigh. But that’s good, isn’t it? We hear about books we might have never known about. We discover genres we never considered before. And we begin supporting the careers of authors who might not be on the New York Times best seller list, but are still fantastic artists. People have always shared their taste in books, but now we can share our reading lists across cities, states, and even countries, with the click of a button. Perhaps we’ve lost the randomness of finding a fantastic read with the help of a librarian, but we’ve found a worldwide community of fellow readers to share with and learn from.  It’s literary globalization, and it’s bringing us closer together through books.

So where’s the downside? We’re discovering new authors, finding new loves. We’re connecting with people over a shared interest: reading. There has to be a catch, right?

Yes.  One of the most dangerous things about getting a bunch of people together is Group Think. One voice multiplies into hundreds, then thousands, and suddenly the public outcry that something is worthwhile drowns out the few voices who protest that it’s not. Or worse, the opposite happens: the public decides that a book is lousy, so we miss out on a novel we’d really love.

But is that necessarily a bad thing? Pop culture gets a bad rap, but it’s really only popular because a lot of people like it. Popularity isn’t synonymous with quality, but if five thousand of your closest friends enjoyed Hunger Games, chances are you will too. But the publishing industry controls everything, so we only get what they decide is worthwhile! The publishing industry decides what is published, sure. But it also listens very carefully to the desires of readers, otherwise it’ll fail. The industry is also under even more pressure these days to produce wonderful books, since self-publishing has become so popular (and yes, I’d say that you can add self-publishing to the list of wonderful things brought to us by the digital age. But that’s another story).

So I say unto thee: Blog on. Tweet forward. Explore the riches that goodreads, Amazon, and Facebook have to offer. Keep the social in social media, if you’ll forgive the lameness of that expression. But talk to your friends too. Ask your mom what she’s reading. Steal a book off your best friend’s coffee table.

Go to the library.

Thanks for reading.

Lauren

Blog Award

The indomitable Brooks Benjamin has ever-so-sweetly nominated me for the VERY INSPIRING BLOGGER AWARD.

Needless to say…I’m flattered 🙂

embarassedgif

But, with great power comes great responsibility, so let’s get down to business.

Here are 7 things about me and my writing that you might not know:

  1. As of March 1st, I will have been writing fiction for 10 months.
  2. In that time, I’ve written the first and second drafts of SIGHTLESS, the first two chapters of DIVE, 8 short stories, and over 30 blog posts. If that sounds like bragging, that’s because it is. I’m pretty proud of myself. 🙂
  3. My worst fear, to date, is that I will never be published. To fight that fear, I write every single day, no matter what.
  4. I’m thinking about starting a business (a business!). It’ll be a query and synopsis editing service for writers (a la The Girl with the Green Pen), and it’ll be part of this site. Stay tuned.
  5. My biggest inspiration right now is Juliana L Brandt. She’s brave, talented, and hard working…not to mention a fierce friend. I wanna grow up to be just like her.
  6. I’m a chronic abuser of filter words (saw, thought, wondered, realized, etc) in my writing. I have to fight them off with a stick.
