WonderCon:
According to Wikipedia, WonderCon is “an annual comic book, science fiction, and motion picture convention, held in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1987.” For the last two years, it has been held in Anaheim.
But it’s so much more. It’s costumes. It’s characters. It’s running through the aisles with light sabers and Tardis t-shirts. It’s autographs and pictures. It’s whispers and shouts. And for many, it’s the best time of the year…
…aside from Comic-Con, anyway.
I was lucky enough to attend WonderCon this year with my uncle (who is one of the original ComicCon nerds…hi Mark!) and my boyfriend, Superman.
We spent the weekend exploring the Dealer Rooms, thumbing through comics, eyeing collectibles, trying on t-shirts, and mooning over gorgeous art.
I also bought ALL the books. Here’s a small sampling…

We also saw PANELS AND SCREENINGS
WonderCon is a great opportunity to hear form the pros about all manner of wonderful things: writing, drawing, acting, marketing, pitching…you name it! It’s also a lot of fun to learn behind-the-scenes stuff.
A few highlights:
Cassandra Clare and the cast of City of Bones (+ a trailer and scene!)
Cassie is super friendly and her cast seems very enthusiastic about the project. I’m looking forward to seeing this YA novel on the silver screen, especially the party scenes.
Bruce Cambell and the cast of Evil Dead (+ a trailer and scene!)
BC is dry and witty, and the movie looks ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING. I can’t be alone in my bathroom anymore.
Joss Whedon and the cast of Much Ado About Nothing (+ a trailer and scene!)
Joss…is…my…favorite…human. I also saw many familiar faces (including Andrew from Buffy and Simon from Firefly/Serenity)
COSTUMES
Still, my favorite part of Wondercon was wandering around, checking out the amazing costumes.
I saw stormtroopers mourning the loss of their Death Star comrades…
…Steampunk princesses curtsy in their clanking costumes,
….sonic screwdriver waving Whovians
…and Whedonites losing their MINDS over Joss and Jane Espenson (who can blame them?!)
As I’m sure you can tell, the fans are what make WonderCon what it is. The best part of the entire Con (aside from hearing Joss make a reference to “Friday Night Lights”) was getting to see all these wonderful nerds having such an AMAZING time.
Iron Man was a huge hit. I was star struck.
Gandalf…he had to hurry. His family was waitin
R2D2 was a very busy droid, but he had time to follow me around and give me a kiss.
He’s either THE Devil or A Devil. It was unclear.
Muscles and Metal.
Zelda was BIG at WonderCon.
Scary. Move away slowly.
OMG IT’S VANELLOPE FROM WRECK IT RALPH.
Honestly, I’m not sure who they are. Nerd Cred Diminished.
Sorry about my thumb. I was just so excited.
I highly recommend you try to attend either WonderCon or Comic-Con next year. It’s a fantastic experience, whether you dress up, dress down, go all weekend or just for the day. Just go…you won’t regret it.
SO! Who will YOU dress up as?!
Lauren
Thanks for sharing. It looks amazing and I’m sure you had way more fun than you could ever convey in words!!
pretty much! 🙂
Awesome pics! I’m glad you had fun! Me and the Wife went to C2E2 (Chicago’s Comic Con) last year at McCormick Place and it was MASSIVE. We took a lot of pictures and even sat in on a room with Val Kilmer who was wearing a giant black Cowboy hat for some reason (and yes, he did say “I’M BATMAN.”) We may go again this year and I think I would post about the shenanigans on my blog this time!
Dude, I’ve totally met that demon guy! Awesome.
Wow, and I thought Ren Faires were pretty crazy…
